At Yorkshire Ouse Sailing club Racing is in our DNA

Yorkshire Ouse Sailing Club is based on the River Ouse to the Southwest of York. This allows us access to a fascinating stretch of river from the locks a few miles downstream at Naburn right up to the millennium bridge on the edge of York. Racing here is never the same and requires skills way beyond circling buoys on a static lake.

To win on a river, you will need to take advantage of river currents and eddies, wind funnels and reflections, constantly changing conditions as the banks affect the wind, river traffic and other users. It has been said, if you can sail well on a river, you can well sail anywhere...

Below are the Races and Race Series hosted by Yorkshire Ouse Sailing Club..

  • Wednesday Points Series - a seasonal trophy based on a number of Wednesday evening races over spring and earlier summer.
  • Sunday Points Series - a seasonal trophy based on sunday series races over the summer months.
  • Junior League
  • N12 Open for the Naburn Paddle
  • Enterprise Open for the Carr Trophy

New to Racing

Most of our experienced sailors are more than happy to take less experienced people as crew. In addition, our Junior League and Beginners days are a safe way for you to get more experience in a more relaxed atmosphere.

You will need the Adult Level 2 or Junior Level 3 sailing certificate to helm a formal event. We can teach you or a certificate from any training center is valid.

If you have never raced, we would recommend crewing at least once to get to know the ropes as it can feel a little daunting and read the racing rules for the club.

Other than that, bring some lunch and be ready to have a great time.

New to Naburn

If you have never raced at Naburn before, you are in for a pleasant surprise. The scenery and river sailing make it a top venue.

There is a good amount of preparation space but please keep vehicles off the slip ramp to preserve space, especially at the busier events.

The clubhouse has all the usual changing and catering facilities, microwave / kettle etc. available.

There is an additional racing rule at Naburn where if you touch a moored boat (the boat, not a fender.) you must immediately retire from the race and report the incident to the Office of the Day.

Officer of the Day (OOD) Instructions

We ask all our members to help run various events as the Officer of the Day (OOD). If you have not done it before, it’s an enjoyable experience; if you have, you will know it’s pretty easy. I have tried to allocate at least one OOD duty to each person/family. Allocating this out is an impossible task so I ask that you work with me and follow a few ground rules. But firstly, what is OOD about?

OOD stands for Officer of the Day and may simply be called OD. As OOD, you are responsible for –

  • OOD stands for Officer of the Day and may simply be called OD. As OOD, you are responsible for –
  • Ensuring that conditions are suitable. – Is the river level under 600mm high (https://check-for-flooding.service.gov.uk/station/8208), is the wind force 2 – 6? Is it not snowing, freezing or pouring down all day? Send a message on WhatsApp before the event if you are thinking of cancelling/postponing. Someone from the committee will also pick up on it and change the calendar to indicate it has been cancelled.
  • Setting the course for each event and putting the marks out. – If you are unsure, ask several participants what they want, or suggest your thoughts. “Upstream over the start line, mark below the narrows and another mark just before the Marina jetties, all to port? Is that ok?” and you will struggle to go wrong.
  • Start procedure and listen to any disputes. The start procedure involves several bells and flags; this is documented in the OOD box. Racing rules are on the website or in the OOD box. Ask experienced members if you need help.
  • Taking results, calculating winners, etc. Normally, it is just recording start and lap times in the book. Ask someone to show you.
  • Firstly, don’t panic. It’s not as difficult as it may seem, and there are plenty of people around to ask for help. For example, if you are not happy putting the marks out or they are too heavy, ask for assistance, similarly, if you need help with outboard engines, you should be given it. In return, if you are sailing and the OOD needs help, please give it, as they have given their time up so you can take part! Young people get a lot of satisfaction from being OOD.

Officer of the Day (OOD) Instructions

Ground rules.

  • If the data is unsuitable, please arrange a swap with someone else or get someone to fill it etc. Inform a member of the committee who will update the calendar.
  • If you cannot swap and fulfil an OOD duty, please inform the Sailing Secretary (Currently Steve Axford) as soon as possible.
  • For standard Wednesday evening or Sunday handicap races, especially if the weather looks disappointing,  post a message on WhatsApp asking if anyone intends to participate. You can cancel the event if you do not get any participants by 7 p.m. the previous day.
  • Be ready to start the event on time.
  • The OOD usually brings milk for the event. You are entitled to claim this back from the treasurer if you wish.
  • If I have missed you off and not allocated an event to you, please offer to do a duty for someone who needs a swap, assist someone else or let the Sailing Secretary know so we can include you.
